Study in Canada Scholarships
Attend classes in Canada. The purpose of these scholarships is to broaden the opportunities available to postsecondary institutions in Canada to host international students from a wide variety of countries and territories on short-term exchanges for the purposes of study or research. Because of this, institutions will have the opportunity to strengthen and diversify their international linkages, as well as promote their academic and research excellence in new markets.
The newly formed connections will contribute to the diversification and enrichment of Canada's educational engagement with a wide variety of partners, the strengthening of bilateral ties, and the complementing of the broader international trade diversification efforts of the Canadian government.
Scholarships to study in Canada are offered through the International Scholarships Program of Global Affairs Canada. This program is a short-term exchange opportunity.
Eligibility
To be eligible, you must be:
- a citizen of an eligible country/territory
- Asia: Bangladesh, Nepal, Taiwan
- Europe: Türkiye, Ukraine
- Middle East and North Africa: Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia
- Sub-Saharan Africa: Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda
- a student who is attending a postsecondary institution on a full-time basis in one of the eligible countries or territories
- paying tuition fees to that institution both at the time of application and for the entirety of your time spent there as an exchange student.
If any of the following apply to you, then you cannot receive this scholarship:
- you are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident already, or you have a citizenship or residency application that is pending in Canada.
- You are already enrolled in a scholarship program that is supported financially by the Government of Canada.
- You are currently enrolled in an academic program leading to a degree, diploma, or certificate at a post-secondary institution in Canada.
Canadian post-secondary institutions interested in hosting students must:
- be a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
- have a valid student exchange agreement with the student’s home institution that waives tuition fees for scholarship recipients (required for college/undergraduate study only)
Scholarship value and duration

Eligible expenses
Certain students are eligible to use scholarship funds toward the following:
- visa or study/work permit fees
- airfare via the course that is both the most direct and the cheapest.
- insurance for medical care
- Expenses related to maintaining one's standard of living, such as those for housing, utilities, and food
- transportation on the ground, including a pass for the local public transportation system
- books and supplies essential to their academic or research endeavors, with the exception of computers and other machinery
The following grants are available to Canadian institutions:
- $500 will be provided to each recipient of a scholarship in order to assist with administrative costs once the student has arrived in Canada.
- a refund of any additional employer compliance fees that may have been paid to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada in certain circumstances
How the funding process works
Global Affairs Canada, also known by its legal name, the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD), will provide funding to Canadian institutions in the form of a non-negotiable contribution agreement.
These institutions will then be responsible for distributing the funds to successful students in accordance with the procedures established within their own institutions. In the event that a student does not accept the scholarship, Canadian institutions are required to return the full amount to DFATD, which includes the administrative fee.
Procedure for making applications
Before the submission deadline, Canadian educational institutions must submit an application on behalf of students who are eligible.
Ahead of the time for submission of applications
Institutions in Canada that are interested in providing housing for students should:
- spread the word about the scholarship among the teaching and administrative staff.
- promote the scholarship to institutions that are eligible to be partners.
- Investigate the possibility of signing student exchange agreements with qualified partner institutions.
Institutions located outside of Canada that want to participate in the international student exchange program in Canada should:
- Examine the prerequisites for participation.
- Investigate the possibility of establishing student exchange programs with Canadian educational institutions.

Prerequisites for Students to Achieve Success
Students who are chosen to receive a scholarship commit to the following:
- participate in research or studies at a Canadian institution full-time in accordance with its definitions
- refrain from participating in clinical training or research that is clinically-oriented and involves direct patient care.
- Pay the majority of your time in Canada to studying or conducting research at a full-time pace.
- After the scholarship period has ended, each recipient is responsible for completing their education at their home institution.
- Should you fail to fulfill these requirements, your scholarship award may be revoked.
Additional information
- Scholarships are not transferable and cannot be renewed once they have been used.
- The availability of funding from the Canadian government is a prerequisite for receiving a scholarship.
- Both the Canadian institution that awards a scholarship and the student who receives the scholarship are exempt from paying any taxes on the scholarship.
- After the scholarship period has ended, students are required to finish their degrees at the institution from which they originally graduated.
